Art Against Racism, a 501(c)(3) organization, invites artists to submit artwork for “The Art of Black Joy: A Celebration of Life, Happiness and Culture,” a juried exhibition that aims to showcase the beauty, vibrancy, and diversity of Black culture. The group exhibition features a collection of artworks that explore the joy and resilience that is inherent in Black culture, despite structural and personal challenges to one’s being. The exhibition will be hosted at the Monroe Township Library during mid-January to February 2024 and indefinitely on AAR on-line galleries.
Black Joy is as multifaceted as the diversity within “Black” culture. Artists are asked to share their two-dimensional visual interpretations of the significance of joy in the lives of Black people. The work can explore any aspect of Black happiness including, but not limited to, the significance of family, community, food, games and play, security, work, and the meaning of joy as an act of resistance to oppression.
This exhibition centers the lives and visions of Black artists, but any artist with an understanding and appropriate visual expression of Black Joy is welcome to submit work for this exhibition.
