Affecting Expression unearths queer history with humor, heart, and imaginative theatricality—and explores female artists’ multi-layered relationships with each other, art-making, legacy, and home.
It’s 1852, and renowned crossdressing Shakespearean actress Charlotte Cushman is retiring from the stage to move to Rome with her long-term partner, writer Matilda Hays. Joining their party is a young sculptor named Harriet Hosmer and an enigmatic figure representing Charlotte’s stage persona: “Dramatis Personae." As tension rises, the walls of their home and the boundary between art and reality become increasingly unreliable. This queer tragicomedy combines history with meta-theatrical and fantastical elements to imagine what a queer household would look like without the modern language to describe that experience, and explores the thin line between finding and losing oneself in art.
