Opening April 15, 2021, is the outdoor installation of portraits by Robin Resch for her ongoing series Taking Pause that were made while she was the 2020-2021 Artist in Residence for the Princeton Arts Council. Presented as photographic banners in Dohm Alley on Nassau Street, these portraits were made within the Princeton community in response to the challenges of 2020—a year that confronted us as a nation in terms of health, racial injustice, and social reckoning.
Taking Pause is a documentary, collaborative portrait project in which Resch asks each participant the question “what is irreplaceable to you?” and to reflect on what in their lives feels most essential. Each person is documented with two distinct portraits. One of their physical self and an accompanying portrait of their reflective self through what they choose to share. They also tell the story behind their selection as a brief written text. Taking Pause combines photographs and stories in a visual and verbal narrative that explores both the complexities and simplicities of what we value.
Resch began work on Taking Pause in early 2018. Between November 2018 and March 2019, she drove solo 10,553 miles to work with people across the United States.
Her hope with this installation of local portraits is to create a contemplative space that will invite reflection and healing for the Princeton community. This installation was made possible through the support of Princeton University’s Humanities Council.
