Curious how art can disseminate science? Join a talk by Kalliopi Monoyios '00 at the Denver Botanic Gardens (also online) April 12! Monoyios' early work as a science illustrator informed her views on how art can work in the service of science, opening conversations that might otherwise be tuned out with more direct modes of communication. Now she is using those insights as a fine artist to mature the conversation around plastic. Though much of the environmentally themed work about plastic leads with guilt and shame, her work seeks to balance that with awe and beauty to invite reflection on the complexity of our relationship with the material. On the one hand, it is a concerning environmental pollutant; on the other, it makes contemporary life possible. Developing quality solutions to our plastic pollution problem will depend on the depth and nuance of our understanding of this duality.
