Nathan Phan ‘19, a Vietnamese American singer-songwriter, recently released his debut album Type A, based on his award-winning one-man senior thesis show. It is available on all streaming platforms under his artist name ASAMAI. You can check the album out here:

This album is an exploration of his Asian American identity, where he tackles Asian stereotypes (e.g. the Model Minority, the Oriental Fantasy, the Unfeeling Robot) by taking them on, deconstructing them, and finding the humanity behind them.

Some fan-favorite songs right now are:

  1. “Nihowdy” (a country song by the Model Minority character trying to prove his Americanness) Also has a version sung in Chinese!

  2. “Fortune Cookie” (a sultry and lewd rap by the Oriental Fantasy character that leans into the overt fetishization of Asian women/people in media)

  3. and “iAsian.mp4” ( a robot spoken-word song performed by the Unfeeling Robot stereotype listing the functions of the robotic Asian American)

If you would like to share your thoughts on the album with him or are interested in collaboration, you can reach out to Nathan at asianamericanlove@gmail.com.
