The City We Make Together Arrives August 16!

Aaron Landsman has co-authored a book about the performance of democracy, and about how we can engage with communities outside our own in a way that honors difference, adventure, curiosity and creativity. The City We Make Together, published by The University of Iowa Press' Humanities and Public Life series, chronicles the creation and production of a participatory theater work called City Council Meeting in five US cities. It offers approaches to documentary and ethnographic performance-making, stories from the field, and a path toward a curriculum for civic engagement. In this particularly fractured political moment, The City We Make Together holds hope for democracy in local political action.

Salamander and Sixth Finch Publish Poems by Jeanette Beebe '14 That Explore Journalism and ... Birds

"Convincing," a poem by Jeanette Beebe '14, was published in the latest issue of Salamander, a print + web literary journal based in Boston. The poem explores what it means to be a journalist. It begins with an expert pigeon trainer who asked whether we can “compare having a poem with having a baby,” inspired by the idea that “a hen is only an egg’s way of making another egg.” Sixth Finch, an online literary journal, also published a poem by Beebe this spring: "Tremolo." There are birds in this poem, too.
